Something 'Bout Archie

David Archuleta is a total square. I don't mean this as an insult--I'm sure even he would gladly admit it--but rather as an admission of a generally accepted fact. Archie is an old soul who is about as hip as my grandmother with her two artificial hips. But we love him anyways because, if nothing else, he is completely true to himself. His latest album, The Other Side of Down, doesn't break any new ground musically, but it is compulsively listenable. I seriously have not been able to press stop since I got it last Tuesday, and I think the reason for this is because of Archie's self-awareness. The songs are simple and straight-forward--you won't find the bells and whistles of the latest RedOne jam here--just like he is. There are no vocal gymnastics, no excess in any aspect of the production; it's just Archie singing with that gorgeously pure voice of his. I know that this album won't be for most people and that some crazy folks aren't smitten by the sweet-as-honey Archie, but sometimes all I need are some simple pop tunes about stomping roses or riding an elevator (probably the first time that's ever been used in a pop song without a hint of sexual innuendo) and Archie fills that void. Sometimes it's hip to be square.

Thanks for the review! I'm one of David's many adult fans and I really enjoy his music. So do my adult sisters and my niece. I have all 3 of David's albums and he's great in concert. This album really reflects David's personality and I'm loving it. I hope he tours soon! BTW David is @DavidArchie on twitter and his tweets are fun too.

If "square" means looking and singing like David, then where do I sign-up!? LOL

It's so refreshing to see someone who isn't willing to sell their soul for hit songs, fame and money in today's music business. No explicit lyrics, outrageous costumes, crazy antics (the things that seem to get one ahead in the business today) with David, just the real deal with real messages conveyed through his music. The fact that David is true to himself and strong in character makes him ultra cool in my book! He dares to be different and that takes guts.

I just read your review. As David as said many times (even though I have to disagree with him) is that he isn't that cool guy and that he is quirky. David is just David and that is what he is putting out there...a refreshing, inspiring, and just a feel good album that makes you want to dance, sing at the top of your lungs and bounce your head too. I think David and his amazing voice just continue to get better and better as time goes by. David does not pretend to be something he is not...this album is just pure David & his voice. I personally love the album and play it daily. In every song...I think...yes this is so David...speaking out to his fans and sharing his musical talent with us. That voice, that man -- just WOW and AMAZING.

Yep, can't stop listening to this cd once you start. Who can help, but love this wonderful man and his amazing voice. The lyrics of the songs are clever, catchy, clean, and heart warming, with a bit of yearning thrown in on My Kind of Perfect. Love the sass of Stomping the Roses. Just can't get enough.
